What are the most important overall characteristics or skills you look for in a new hire?

Good question. We look for candidates whose background matches the job descriptions and who are well rounded. Good grades are certainly important. But in addition, we also look for candidates who have relevant work, internship or volunteer experience, leadership skills, are involved in their campus or local community, participate in extra-curricular activities, etc. This variety of experience, ability to balance multiple activities and the skills learnt both inside and outside of the classroom help demonstrate multiple aspects of a candidate's character, interests and aptitudes.

As we consider college graduates we assess a number of characteristics beyond the technical skills required.  Even some of the technical skills can be taught on the job and we value developing our talent.  The characteristics that I am sharing  are not in order of importance. These are what we value and feel fit within our culture.  Work ethic, working with others, communication abilities, motivation or initiative, interpersonal skills and communicaiton abilities and lastly overall preparation for employment.  As we interview students we use behavorial questions to vet these characteristics.

Great question!

I look for someone's ability to adapt quickly to new challenges and attack the opportunity with a positive attitude.  When working with new hires that I am mentoring or coaching, I look for their ability to accept and quickly incorporate feedback.  That is the key to having your peers invest in you.  If they know that you are going to apply their direction into your work, they will be far more apt to assist and advocate for you.

Especially for entry-level positions, there are certain characteristics that we look for in our candidates.  In addition to a relevant major and good grades, we look for candidates who are energetic, driven and hungry to learn.  Even for more experienced positions, we want our new hires to have a willing-to-do-anything attitude that will help them to adapt well to a team environment.  A willingness to relocate for opportunities within our company is also important.
