The first reason to send a "Thank You" note is common courtesy to the company representative(s) who invited you to interview for positions at their company. It is important to understand that, for some positions, literally thousands of candidates submit an application. For you to be one of the candidates receiving an interview is a great accomplishment.
Another reason is to continue to express your interest in the position, assuming that you still are interested. By including a statement like "thanks for your time spend with me during our interview. The experience reaffirmed that your company and position would be a great fit with my skills and abilities." implies to a potential employer that you are still interested in the company. In addition, the more contacts you make, the easier it is for the recruiter/manager to remember you.

Great question! While I don't think a thank you note will make or break you in getting a position, I do think it is a nice thing to do. As with anything you would send a thank you note for, it shows the company that you really do appreciate them taking the time to speak with you. It may also open the lines of communication if they should have further questions for you but in an informal way. Good luck with your search!!

You would be surprised to know that in some cases it’s the little things that can sometimes make a difference. Thank you notes definitely offer an opportunity for you to stand out among other applicants. It shows extra effort and in some cases they can definitely have a positive impact. Still keeping in mind, that thank-you letters may or may not make a difference in hiring, it’s probably still a good idea to send one any way. You just never know. Good Luck!

I believe there aren’t consequences for not sending a thank you note, it is just a little added bonus on your behalf that could portray the following things:
Sending a thank you note is a great way to get your name in front of the recruiter and/or hiring manager again. It is courtesy to be thankful if you truly are. It can show that you are thinking about the interview & expresses your excitement to work for the company.

Thank you notes are extremely important and I have had managers specifically ask if a candidate sent one (electronic is fine) as it shows interest, writing skills and how the candidate interacts with others. Definitely a must!
