I am trying to set up my LinkedIn account I am stuck on the work history portion. In the past I have worked different part time jobs (retail, waitress, campus rep) and I was wondering if these are the types of work experiences I should include on my LinkedIn profile? I understand that these accounts are made for business connections, but would it be worse to include my part time positions or no positions at all?

This is a great question and a situation in which many young professionals find themselves. In the case of young professionals, it is generally understood that work experience may be part-time and/or unrelated to education and career interests. Still, some work experience is better than no work experience, so I recommend including the last 2-3 roles you've held on your resume and LinkedIn profile. Be sure to explain the transferable skills learned in these roles and use action verbs to showcase the accomplishments you've had in these experiences. Once you land your first professional role, you can delete these experiences from your professional materials.

LinkedIn profiles are a great way to show your work experience, education, skills, and organizations you belong to. Employers take into account when reviewing young professional’s LinkedIn accounts that they won’t have as much professional experience. I would recommend including your past work history to show the experiences you have had. As you receive more professional experience you can take off your part-time job information. Be sure to include your educational background and the skills you have gained from your part-time jobs.

I would recommend including those experiences in your profile.  Even though they may not be directly connected to the career that you are working to establish, it does speak to your work ethic.  It shows that you have been willing to be a full-time student and work part-time to help finance your education.  This not only speaks to your work ethic, but your character as well.  Conversely, if your were to put no experience in there, it may lead recruiters to question how hard you are willing to work.  In summation, never be ashamed of any hard work that you do.

Great question! I think many young professionals are finding themselves in the same boat. I would definitely include your part time work history in your profile. Many of those positions (while not directly related to your intended profession) give you the ability to demonstrate some highly sought after skills, like working under pressure, prioritizing, dealing with difficult situations and irate customers, etc. You have a jumping off point for discussion. I would also include some of the skills you have acquired in the “Skills & Endorsements” section of your profile – those are searchable by employers!
