For the last 2 years I've passionately dedicated myself to volunteering for Human rights, Children education and Social Work in New York City. This is completely unrelated to my bachelor's degree, which is biomedical engineering. What might be my best options for work combining my education and passion?

Good for you, following your passion and making a difference in your community.  Social responsibility is taken seriously in many companies and is often part of the company culture.  When you begin exploring employers ensure you look at the company website and see what their stance is on volunteering and social responsibility.  During the interview process ask questions as to the company culture and see if that resonates with your research. This is a great way to combine your passion with your profession.  Best of luck to you in finding a great balance between  your passion for volunteering and your profession of biomendical engineering.

I imagine it is difficult to find a job with your education that your day to day responsibilities tie in directly to your passion. When job searching, I would recommend researching companies who have a commitment to community involvement. A lot of companies encourage their employee’s to dedicate time to volunteering. These would also be great questions to ask an interviewer. If you cannot find a company with these values, you could also consider joining a board with one of these organizations as an extracurricular activity. This would be a great leadership opportunity and something you could add to your resume.

It’s great that you are so passionate about volunteering and working with Human Rights, Children’s Education and Social Work in New York City. When you are researching potential companies and positions that are available, research their community outreach program as well. Many companies are involved with the community and put together events for their employees to volunteer with different organizations. Some companies even have a community affairs department or something similar to organize events and volunteer partnerships within the company. When you are interviewing you can also ask about the volunteering opportunities. If someone isn’t already established this might be a great way to kick-start a program at the company you decide to work at.

You have nailed a great big dilemma right on the head! How do I combine my social passions with my professional pursuits?  Here's my question to you...are there organizations that are trying to harness these two areas already?  I think you may need a multi-prong approach here.  Talk to people on both sides of your interest and make some proposals about how you see the two working hand in hand.  These types of problems are where innovation and imagination become forward thinking thought and new industry.  Best of luck!
