Having these memberships is important, but what will set you apart from other applicants is if you hold some type of leadership role in these organizations. Most candidates will join these types of organizations so they can put it on their resume, so just being a member is not a differentiator. I recommend that you seek out leadership opportunities at the student or local chapters of such organizations. Also, seek out leadership opportunities in other areas as well, such as community and volunteer service. As many candidates have the same background, it is critical for you to find something that sets you apart from your competition and leadership ability is one of those things that can do this.
