Great question! Something that most candidates won’t understand is the team dynamics you would enter into if you found the job, or the company culture. Some of the more progressive companies today are working hard to make testimonials, videos and other content available to help candidates understand if they would be a good fit. This is still a hard thing to understand going in.
Also, just like a candidate puts their best version forward in an interview, so does an employer. Meaning they will often talk about the great things happening in the company and paint a picture of positive work environment while leaving out some of the day-to-day challenges of the job or the company.
When interviewing, don’t be shy to ask questions that help get the full story of the team and environment you would be joining. Think about how you would be empowered. How you would be developed. How you would be coached and mentored. Don’t be shy to probe deeply into these areas in a respectful way.
Best of luck!
