How (if at all) can a internship with an arm of the federal government translate to bringing a unique experience to private sector work?

Absolutely, internships are a great opportunity for you to gain experiences and try things you may not be inclined to if it was a full-time job.  A diversity of experiences are more welcome than ever in the public or private sectors, a ton of research that backs up more variety/diversity/unique experiences, etc. that a company has the more successful they are.  If you interview with a company that does not recognize that, can't see the value that different experiences bring, go somewhere else.

Great question! Any type of internship is a great way to gain experience and knowledge in a number of areas. Internships offer a unique opportunity to learn many different functions from different companies and to help you decide where you want to head with your career. The knowledge gained is a great way to expand your resume for future employment. Best of luck!!
