What are the benefits of an internship in one’s field of choice?

Internships are extremely beneficial wether it be in your field of study or not. Internships give you experience outside of the classroom and help you to prepare for your profession down the road. You gain insights to how corporations work, what employers really look for, how goals are set and measured, and how what you've learned in school applies out in the working world. I would recommend anyone to do an internship if at all possible.

The benefit of an internship in any field, not only one’s field of choice, is gaining experience – plain and simple. I know, you’re most likely looking for something more profound than that, but seriously – experience. With internship experience comes a deeper understanding of what the world is like outside of academia, and trust me, whether you have held a job before, leadership positions in student groups, or juggled your time with sports, working with internal and/or external stakeholders during and internship can really help to develop and hone your soft skills and understanding of a given field. Now, in your field of choice you have the added bonus of learning whether or not that field is a true fit. Wouldn’t you like to learn beforehand that the career you’ve always envisioned for yourself is absolutely terrible, or on the flip side, amazing? Additionally, once you decide a field is truly for you, working in one’s field of choice starts you on the path to building a network and gaining experience that may help you to open doors once you begin full time!

The benefits of an internship in your field of choice are almost endless! First of all, you get a taste of what field you have decided to go into and really determine if it is something you could see yourself doing long term and be happy with. If it is not something you could see yourself doing long term or be happy with, then you know that your plans may need to change. If the experience is positive, you are on an excellent start to your career. You will gain skills and experiences that will help you grow professionally and give you a head start in your next position. Furthermore, you will be able to start building your professional network and connections. In short, an internship can give you great insight into the rest of your career!
